Coale also expressed hope that Lithuania would agree to hold a bilateral meeting with Belarus at the deputy ministerial level. According to him, Lukashenka released Lithuanian trucks from Belarus at his request, and called the problem of contraband balloons manageable: "one or two balloons still fly from time to time, but not as before."
Coale noted that the main motivation for focusing on Belarus is humanitarian, primarily the release of prisoners. However, in the conversation, he also touched upon the economic interests of the United States:
"Potash fertilizers from Belarus should go through Lithuania, and that way they can enter the European market — all the way to the United States."
He also stated that he discussed this issue with US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, who noted that Belarusian fertilizers would be very useful for the country.
"President Trump and I do not believe in preconditions," Coale said, adding that he expects the same approach from Lithuania.
"I hope that Lithuania will agree to a bilateral dialogue with Belarus at the level of deputy foreign ministers. We need to stop what is hindering life on both sides," he noted.
Coale spoke about the necessity of dialogue: "We need to sit down and talk. If it doesn't work out – get up and leave. But first, we need to try."
"I have been talking to him for a year without preconditions – and successfully. Look, the world is full of good and bad people. But the more they talk, the better. President Trump went to North Korea. He even spoke twice with the Mayor of New York, who is Trump's complete opposite. But they met. And that's how something can be achieved – through communication. You can't do anything if you set preconditions that must happen. Then they might talk, or they might not. That way you achieve nothing," Coale said.
He also added that Lukashenka's visit to the United States is being discussed.
