Trump Removed His Son's Ex-Fiancée as Ambassador to Greece After Corruption Allegations
Kimberly Guilfoyle allegedly also told an official in Athens that the US could overthrow the Greek government.

President Donald Trump's administration asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as the US Ambassador to Greece, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced, writes the BBC.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, drew attention after media reports claimed she allegedly asked a Trump donor to pay off a large credit card bill in exchange for access to the administration, and also behaved inappropriately during her stay in Athens.
On Tuesday, Trump stated that she had done a good job but would "no longer be in" Greece.
"I didn't like what I read," he said.
Guilfoyle vowed to defend herself, calling the allegations false, and stated that the ambassadorship was "the honor of a lifetime" for her.
Zacharia made the announcement during her first and unusually brief press briefing. She reported that Guilfoyle was "asked to resign" without providing further details.
"She was a great member of the team, and we wish her all the best," the press secretary said.
Guilfoyle, 57, the former wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, was first nominated as the US representative to Athens in December 2024 — a month before Trump's return to the White House as president.
Around the same time, it became known that she had broken up with Donald Trump Jr., to whom she was engaged. In a lengthy post on X on Tuesday, Guilfoyle thanked President Trump, stated that she would always be his loyal supporter, and dismissed all allegations of wrongdoing.
"I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity," she wrote, adding that she would not allow "false accusations to erase decades of my public service."
Over the past week, her position became increasingly precarious as allegations of inappropriate conduct multiplied.
A series of text messages, reviewed by the BBC and first reported by the Wall Street Journal, allegedly show Guilfoyle soliciting money from Eric Deeters, a longtime Trump ally.
"This won't be reflected anywhere if you transfer the money to American Express," she wrote in one Signal message.
In another message, just days before her US Senate confirmation hearing last July, Guilfoyle wrote: "Sweetie, please, I need you to do this for me today."
Guilfoyle's lawyers questioned the authenticity of these messages and stated that she was asking for payment for money owed to her for speeches and consulting work performed for Deeters before she became an ambassador.
Audio recordings obtained by the Wall Street Journal reportedly contain statements by Guilfoyle in which she boasts about her connections to influential Greek business magnates who, she claimed, paid for luxurious trips and private jet flights.
According to the newspaper, she also told an official in Athens that the US could overthrow the Greek government.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was photographed with Guilfoyle during a trip to Athens last week, was also reportedly unhappy with these allegations.
After news emerged that Guilfoyle was being asked to leave her post, Deeters stated that it was "a great day for American diplomacy."
Deeters, who reported that he ultimately never paid Guilfoyle, also stated that the claim that he owed her money for speeches and consulting services was "a complete lie." He announced that he plans to file a lawsuit against her.
Guilfoyle has long been a political ally of Trump and had a relationship with Donald Trump Jr. for many years. They became engaged in 2018 and broke up at the end of 2024.
