In Ukraine's Chernivtsi region, a large section of the wall of the Khotyn Fortress, built on the Dniester River in the 13th century, partially collapsed. No one was injured due to the emergency situation, said Khotyn city mayor Andriy Dranchuk. Tourist access to the damaged section of the fortress has been restricted, writes life.pravda.com.ua.

According to Andriy Dranchuk, employees of the "Khotyn Fortress" reserve and the State Emergency Service promptly responded and restricted access for tourist groups to the damaged wall. The incident was reported to the Regional Military Administration, the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine.
"The collapse is very significant [...] We are doing our utmost to find funding for restoration works. We will cope with everything," Andriy Dranchuk wrote.
Khotyn Fortress, built on the site of a 10th-century settlement, was one of the most powerful defensive structures of its kind in Eastern Europe. The castle was rebuilt many times. For seven centuries, the fortress served as a military outpost for many states, as it was located in a strategically important border area.
In 1621, the army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which included our ancestors from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, defeated the 160,000-strong army of Turkish Sultan Osman II near Khotyn. Thanks to the defeat of the Turkish army, the Ottoman Empire was weakened, and its aggressive plans against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were halted. In 1673, another victorious battle of the combined Crown and Lithuanian army against the Ottomans took place here.
In the 20th century, Khotyn Fortress became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ukraine. The ancient historical structure is included in the list of the "Seven Wonders of Ukraine." A state historical and architectural reserve, "Khotyn Fortress," operates on its territory.
In December 2023, the restoration of the walls, some sections of which were in an emergency state, was completed there.
