The unique operation was performed on September 2 after an international master class on minimally invasive surgery of the mitral and aortic valves. The patient was a woman with severe mitral regurgitation — a condition in which part of the blood flows back through the valve into the heart.

The operation was performed by Professor Nemir Granov, director of the surgical department of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, together with Belarusian cardiac surgeons. Using an endoscope, specialists restored the leaflets and subvalvular structures. The postoperative result was assessed as very good.

Another patient underwent endoscopic aortic valve replacement through an intercostal access, without sternotomy. This technique allows for reduced postoperative pain and accelerated recovery. The operation was also successful, and the implanted prosthesis is functioning properly.

The National Research Center for Cardiology noted that performing such operations opens up new opportunities for treating patients with heart valve diseases. International cooperation and exchange of experience with foreign specialists should help further develop minimally invasive and high-tech cardiac surgery in Belarus.
