Trump became the first sitting US president in 100 years whose portrait appeared on a coin
Donald Trump became the first sitting US president in a century whose portrait was placed on American money. On Wednesday, the US Mint issued a collectible one-dollar coin dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the country's independence, writes the BBC.
The coin features Trump, as well as the words Liberty and In God we Trust. The coins are sold in sets of 25 for $61, and a bag of 100 coins costs $154.50. A few hours after sales began, a message appeared on the Mint's website stating that the coins were temporarily out of stock.
The Mint stated that the issue is part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the USA and is intended to be a distinctive addition to modern collections. The coins are also sold through vending machines in Washington, where there is a limit of no more than five coins per person.
The coins resemble gold ones in appearance, but they contain no gold. They are made of an alloy consisting of 88.5% copper, with the remainder being zinc, manganese, and nickel.
In May, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also reported plans to issue a $250 banknote with Trump's portrait for the country's 250th anniversary.
Typically, US federal law prohibits placing images of living people on American money. However, coinage laws have certain specific features.
During Trump's first presidential term, a 2020 law was passed that prohibits placing images of living people on the reverse of coins, but does not prohibit doing so on the obverse. Trump's portrait is indeed located on the obverse of the new coin.
Another rule, known as the Thayer Amendment of 1866, prohibits portraits of living people on American banknotes, but it does not apply to coins.
Previously, a sitting US president had already appeared on a coin: Calvin Coolidge was depicted on a half-dollar issued for the 150th anniversary of US independence. Therefore, the coin with Trump marks the first such instance in one hundred years.
