Sergei Lavrov spoke at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Reflecting on economic problems, migration, and rising energy prices in Europe, he called the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, "Führer Ursula."
"Ursula von der Leyen — we call her 'Führer Ursula' — is trying to pull into the European Commission those competencies, those powers, which, according to the decisions of the entire European Union, were not transferred to Brussels but remain with national governments," the Russian minister said.
Lavrov stated that after the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged, the President of the European Commission allegedly said: "Yes, our voters will suffer because energy prices will be significantly higher. But we are obliged to suffer for the sake of the Ukrainian people defending our European values."
Lavrov called one of the "European values" the alleged "legislative prohibition of the Russian language in education, culture, daily life, and mass media" in Ukraine and stated that this is Europe's path "back to Nazism."
Lavrov's statements came during the aggressive war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. Moscow regularly uses accusations of Nazism to justify its invasion, although it is Russian troops that have occupied part of a neighboring country and are destroying Ukrainian cities.
