Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an ultimatum to Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Kyiv demands that repeaters, which Kyiv believes adjust the routes of Russian drones, be disconnected and dismantled within a week. What exactly is being discussed?
As explained to "Nasha Niva" by Belpol, the repeaters Volodymyr Zelenskyy is referring to are most likely additional equipment located on standard cellular communication towers of Belarusian mobile operators.
Their operating principle was previously explained in detail by "Zerkalo". Russian attack drones – specifically "Shaheds" – use them for navigation and data transmission (for example, real-time video or data about their position, speed, and other parameters). However, a standard cellular base station "hits" a distance of only about three kilometers, which is insufficient for controlling drones that fly deep into Ukrainian territory.
If a directional repeater or amplifier is installed on the tower, the signal can be sent 30-50 kilometers deep into foreign territory. Such equipment creates a communication channel directed as a beam towards Ukraine, so that the drone can "latch onto" it.
The drone flies, maintaining communication with several base stations. Knowing the speed of the signal to each of them, one can mathematically accurately calculate the coordinates of the UAV. Ukrainians use this method to shoot down drones, while Russians use it to guide them.
Specifically, this could involve towers in the Polesia State Radiation-Ecological Reserve. LTE (4G) mobile communication towers began appearing in the uninhabited zone quite recently – in April.

Towers in the Homel region on the border with Ukraine are not the only ones where additional equipment used for military purposes may be installed. Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed this in his speech.
"We have recorded that special equipment has been installed along our border in Belarusian territory, which works for Russia, for the Russians, which helps the Russians launch drone attacks against us, against our territory."
"We in Ukraine know about four such repeaters in Belarus – specifically in the Homel and Brest regions. It is precisely thanks to such equipment that strikes were carried out on the Zhytomyr, Rivne, Volyn regions, on our energy infrastructure, on our railway – on ordinary cities, on our villages. Belarus has time to dismantle this equipment."
Ukraine has not named the locations where it detects the presence of such repeaters.
