Belarus is closing its embassy in Finland. The corresponding decision was adopted by the government on August 20, according to an entry in the National Register of Legal Acts. It registered Council of Ministers Resolution No. 424 "On the closure of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Republic of Finland," the publication "Pozirk" noted .
The text of the resolution itself has not yet been published, and the government press service has not officially announced the decision.
Diplomatic relations between Belarus and Finland were established on February 26, 1992. The Finnish diplomatic mission in Minsk began its work on October 1, 2010, as a branch of the Finnish embassy in Lithuania. The Belarusian embassy in Helsinki has been operating since December 5, 2011.
The Belarusian embassy in Finland was also accredited concurrently in Denmark. From 2018 to 2024, Aliaksei Samasujeu was the ambassador. A new ambassador has not been appointed. Currently, there is no information about contact persons on the embassy's website.
However, the work of the diplomatic mission was actually suspended earlier. On July 3, 2026, a message about "temporary suspension of work" appeared on the embassy's website. The reason was not specified. The message stated that from August, Belarusians will be offered to contact other Belarusian foreign institutions for consular issues, including the Consulate General in Daugavpils or the embassy in Stockholm.
Publications on trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Finland on the embassy's website ceased back in 2022. However, information about political contacts between the two countries, including high-level reciprocal visits that took place before 2021, is preserved.
Formally, on the diplomatic mission's website, relations between the two states are characterized as based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, without problems or contradictions. However, real political relations have significantly deteriorated after the events of 2020.
The closure of the embassy in Helsinki is part of a broader "optimization" of the Belarusian diplomatic network. This process began back in April 2021. Some Belarusian embassies in Europe are being closed, and some neighboring countries are being accredited to Belarusian ambassadors working in other states.
At the same time, Minsk is expanding its network of general consulates in Russia.
