A Collection of Prison Essays by Mikalai Statkevich Has Been Released
The book was released in Bialystok by the "Kamunikat" publishing house.
Mikalai Statkevich announced on his Telegram channel that his book has been released in Bialystok.
He quotes the text placed on the cover: "How do people make moral choices in difficult situations, how do they become heroes or traitors, how do they turn into scoundrels or remain honest people? To answer these questions, I had to delve into human psychology. Down to instincts. However, in the literature on the subject, there was no clear definition of human instincts, and in many places, their presence in us was generally denied, apart from a few obvious primitive ones, which completely contradicted my understanding of humanity. Therefore, in the main text of this book, which also gave it its title, I had to propose my own definition of our instincts and their list. And then, based on this, describe how we make our moral choice in a difficult situation. I hope that understanding this will help the reader better grasp human nature, themselves, and everything that has happened and is happening with our country and us."
Mikalai Statkevich was imprisoned three times.
In 2005, he was sentenced to three years of restricted freedom (often referred to as "chemistry" or correctional labor) for organizing a street protest in Minsk in October 2004 against the official results of the parliamentary elections and referendum.
He was detained on December 19, 2010, for participating in a protest against the falsification of the 2010 election results, and in May 2011, he was sentenced to 6 years in a maximum-security penal colony. He was released on August 22, 2015.
He was detained on May 31, 2020, while on his way to Komarovka for Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's picket, and a year and a half later, in December 2021, he was sentenced to 14 years in a special regime colony.
On September 11, 2025, he was released by pardon and was to be expelled, but he categorically refused to leave Belarus and was returned to Belarus. He was released on February 19, 2026. He lives in Minsk.
On August 12, Mikalai Statkevich will turn 70.
