Oldest Estonian publication added to the list of extremist materials in Belarus
The Ministry of Information of Belarus continues to add media outlets from European countries to its list of "extremist materials." This time, the Estonian portal Postimees.ee , which has three versions: Estonian, English, and Russian, has been added to it.
Interestingly, the newspaper Perno Postimees ehk Näddalileht (Pärnu Postman, or Weekly) was originally founded during the Russian Empire in 1857 by poet and journalist Johann Voldemar Jannsen.
Then in 1863, with Jannsen's relocation to Dorpat (Tartu), where there was a university and the Estonian national movement emerged, the publication became known as Eesti Postimees (Estonian Postman), and later the prefix Eesti was dropped.
Under the communists, the newspaper became the organ of the Tartu City Committee of the Communist Party and was called Edasi ('Forward').
On September 26, 1987, the newspaper published a historic proposal for the economic autonomy of the Estonian SSR, which received significant support in Estonian society — a plan for the economic development of the republic, autonomous from the USSR.
In 1990, the publication was again named Postimees, and the city newspaper became a nationwide one. At the beginning of the 21st century, a website appeared.
