Benito Mussolini's great-grandson debuted for Rome's "Lazio" at the stadium his great-grandfather opened
23-year-old defender Romano Floriani Mussolini, great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, debuted for the main squad of Rome's "Lazio" in an Italian championship match against "Bologna", writes the BBC.
Floriani Mussolini is a product of the "Lazio" academy, but for the past two years, he has played on loan for other Italian clubs. In the match against "Bologna", he entered the field as early as the 19th minute after a teammate substitution and later received a yellow card.
His debut was symbolic: the match took place at the "Renato Dall'Ara" stadium in Bologna, whose construction was supported by Benito Mussolini a hundred years ago. In 1926, the dictator personally attended the celebrations related to the arena's construction, and the first official match there took place in May 1927.
Initially, the stadium was called "Littoriale" and was part of the fascist government's large-scale sports policy. After the regime's fall, it was renamed, and in 1983, the arena received its current name in honor of Renato Dall'Ara, the long-standing president of "Bologna".
Romano Floriani Mussolini previously emphasized that he is interested exclusively in football. After one of the matches in 2024, media reports emerged about fascist salutes among fans after his goal, but the club firmly rejected these accusations.
Benito Mussolini ruled fascist Italy from 1922 to 1943 and was an ally of Adolf Hitler during World War II. In 1945, Italian partisans captured and executed him.
