Ivatsevichy Bank Refused to Exchange Dollars Received from House Sale
In Ivatsevichy, a 44-year-old woman attempted to exchange dollars she received after selling a house at a bank. One banknote raised suspicions, leading to its refusal and submission for expert examination, reports the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Brest Regional Executive Committee.
The examination confirmed that the banknote was counterfeit. The woman had received this money from her mother, who, in turn, had acquired the banknote several years ago during a house sale transaction in the village. Both women were unaware that the banknote was fake.
The police remind that a criminal case is initiated upon the detection of counterfeit money, even if the person was unaware of its falsity and had no intention of using it for payment.
Criminal liability is provided for the manufacture, storage with intent to sell, or sale of counterfeit money. Depending on the circumstances, the punishment may include restriction of liberty for a term of two to five years or imprisonment for two to seven years. If the crime is committed repeatedly, by an organized group, or on an especially large scale, the term of imprisonment can reach 15 years with a fine.
