This is the third attack on Russian oil and gas infrastructure in the Caspian Sea in recent days. On December 11, SBU drones struck a platform at the Filanovsky field, and the next day the attack was repeated – this time on an object through which oil is exported via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. It was then that the platform at the Korchagin field was damaged for the first time.
As a result of these strikes, oil and gas production was halted at more than 20 wells, and important equipment on both ice-resistant platforms was damaged. All facilities belong to the company "Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft".
The Korchagin field, discovered in 2000, is located in the northern part of the Caspian Sea shelf, approximately 180 kilometers from Astrakhan. Its reserves are estimated at 28.8 million tons of oil and 63.3 billion cubic meters of gas. The Filanovsky field is considered one of the largest explored in Russia and its sector of the Caspian Sea, with reserves of about 129 million tons of oil and 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
