The US seized yet another oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the situation. This occurred as Donald Trump intensifies the oil blockade against the government of Nicolas Maduro.
The tanker Bella 1, which is under US sanctions, was sailing under the Panamanian flag and heading to Venezuela for loading.
Similar seizures occurred on December 10 (the vessel Skipper) and December 20 (the supertanker Centuries).
Trump is intensifying pressure on Maduro, attempting to cut off the regime's main source of income. According to experts, if Venezuela cannot export its oil, its storage facilities will be overflowing, and the state-owned company will have to start shutting down oil wells.
Trump also recognized the Maduro government as a foreign terrorist organization, accusing it of involvement in drug trafficking.
Notably, the tanker Centuries, seized on December 20, was not listed on the public US sanctions list. The tanker was sailing under the Panamanian flag, while the ownership of the oil belongs to a Chinese company.
Venezuela's Vice President and Minister of Oil, Delcy Rodriguez, condemned the seizure of the tanker, calling the move "a serious act of piracy" by the US government.
On December 16, Trump announced a "total blockade" of all sanctioned vessels and recognized the Maduro government as a "foreign terrorist organization".
