Valais Cantonal Police Chief Frédéric Guiller said at a press conference that 115 people suffered burns and injuries.
According to Guiller, the identification of the deceased, as well as some individuals who sustained severe burns, will take some time. It is known that among the deceased are both Swiss citizens and foreign tourists. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry, in turn, reported that it had not yet received information about Belarusian casualties.
The fire broke out at 1:30 AM local time in a bar called Le Constellation. 60 injured people were taken to the hospital in the canton's capital, Sion. The rest, as reported by the head of the local police, were transported to hospitals in Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, and Zurich. Neighboring countries: France, Germany, and Italy also offered assistance in treating the injured.
The cause of the fire, as stated by Swiss Prosecutor General Beatrice Pilu, has not yet been definitively determined: the investigation is examining several versions.
Eyewitnesses to the fire earlier told journalists that the fire started due to a firework placed in a champagne bottle, which was brought too close to the ceiling. The flames, according to witnesses, spread very quickly across the entire ceiling.
Crans-Montana is an upscale resort in the canton of Valais. During holidays, it is usually completely full: for approximately 10,000 residents, there are about 2,600 hotel beds here.
