Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko commented to the British newspaper The Times that 600,000 residents have left the Ukrainian capital this month. Before the war, over 3 million people lived in the city. The mass exodus is taking place amidst Russian mass shelling of Kyiv, which is destroying the city's utility infrastructure in freezing temperatures.

The mayor's press service explained to "Ukrainska Pravda" that this figure is based on mobile operator data. Statistics show that there are currently 600,000 fewer phones registered overnight in the city than usual.
"Hence the figure announced by the mayor. For example, they calculated how many people remained in the city at the start of the war (there were 800,000). Some followed advice, and those who had somewhere to go, left the city to stay with friends. Plus, holidays have been extended now. Also, students are on online learning, and some of them who are not Kyiv residents have dispersed," — Klitschko's press service said.
The mass exodus is taking place against the backdrop of a critical situation with utility infrastructure. After the large-scale Russian attack on January 20, more than 5,500 multi-storey buildings in Kyiv were left without heating, and the left bank of the capital completely lost its water supply for a certain period.
