European Commission turned to the White House for explanations on the future of the trade agreement after the repeal of Trump's tariffs

The US Supreme Court's decision to repeal Trump's tariffs casts doubt on the trade agreement between the EU and the US, signed last summer. The European Commission has approached the White House for clarification to ascertain what steps the US administration plans to take in response to this decision, writes Euronews.

The agreement, signed in July 2025 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump, established common 15% tariffs on EU exports and eliminated tariffs on American industrial goods. In addition, the EU committed to purchasing American energy resources worth $750 billion by 2028 and investing $600 billion in strategic US industries.

Now, the court's decision calls into question the legality of tariffs already paid by European companies and future obligations under the agreement. A number of MEPs are considering postponing the vote on the implementation of the agreement or introducing amendments that would allow its suspension in the event of new threats from Trump.

European companies face legal uncertainty regarding trade terms, which could affect the tariff regime or give rise to claims for compensation. The EU notes that businesses on both sides of the Atlantic depend on stability and predictability in trade relations, and therefore continue to work on reducing tariffs.
