Russia to strengthen customs control on the border with Belarus. And this is not a temporary measure

Russia plans to strengthen customs control on the border with Belarus and Kazakhstan. This was reported by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk. According to him, the control will be permanent and aimed at combating goods that, in the opinion of the Russian side, create unfair competition in the domestic market.

From September 2026, the Federal Customs Service of Russia intends to strengthen checks with the help of mobile groups on the border with Belarus. Similar groups are already operating and controlling the transportation of large consignments of goods.

"I want to say right away that this is not some temporary campaign, we will continue this control permanently," states Alexei Overchuk. "Goods are entering our market that create unfair competition for our domestic market. And here we are committed to very tough measures to stop this unfair practice."

It is expected that the new measures will primarily affect businesses and companies involved in product supplies. For ordinary citizens crossing the border in personal vehicles, no significant changes are yet predicted – queues due to checks are unlikely.

In addition, Russian control bodies have already received the right to annul certificates and declarations issued in other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Russia has previously introduced measures that deviate from the general principles of the Customs Union. For example, from April 1, 2026, it is planned to tighten the rules for importing cars from EAEU countries. New requirements may close the scheme where cars were imported into Russia via Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, or Kazakhstan to reduce customs duties.
