Despite US threats, a vessel with Russian diesel is heading to Cuba

In late January, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington would impose tariffs against any country that supplies oil products to Cuba. The country has faced a severe fuel shortage after the cessation of raw material supplies from Venezuela. However, on February 21, it became known that the tanker Sea Horse is heading to Cuba's shores, which, according to analytical company Kpler, may be carrying about 200,000 barrels of Russian diesel fuel, Bloomberg reports .

This vessel is expected to arrive in Cuba in early March. It is reported that the fuel was loaded onto it via transshipment from another vessel near the coast of Cyprus.

It is not yet known whether the tanker will be able to reach its destination port, considering that the US has previously detained at least nine vessels suspected of violating sanctions related to oil supplies.

Cuba received its last shipment of oil on January 9 from Mexico. After the cessation of Venezuelan supplies, the fuel situation on the island became critical: problems arose with electricity generation, transport, and even fuel supply for airlines. According to satellite images, the level of night lighting on the island has decreased by approximately half.

The Kremlin called the situation difficult. Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that US sanctions pressure creates serious difficulties for Cuba. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized Moscow's readiness to provide Havana with political and material support.

Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Havana reported on the preparation of new oil and petroleum product supplies, which are planned to be sent as humanitarian aid.
