Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands will send their ships to defend Cyprus. This was announced by Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Reuters reports.
El Pais newspaper specifies that Spain will send its frigate "Cristóbal Colón" together with the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and Greek Navy ships to ensure the defense of Cyprus.
Simultaneously, France has allowed American military aircraft to temporarily use its bases in the Middle East. "These aircraft contribute to the defense of our partners in the Persian Gulf," a representative of the French General Staff stated.
In addition, Italy plans to send air defense systems to the Gulf countries in response to Iranian airstrikes.
According to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the decision is dictated, among other things, by the presence of Italian citizens in the region — tens of thousands of Italians live in the Gulf countries, and two thousand military personnel are stationed there.
"These are people we want and must protect," she said.
