According to information from the French publication RFI, Ukraine has established cooperation with the internationally recognized Libyan government in Tripoli and deployed its military specialists there. This allows it to influence the situation in the Mediterranean Sea and pose a threat to Russian ships moving towards the Suez Canal.

It is reported that over 200 Ukrainian military personnel and experts are stationed in Libya. They are working at three main facilities. One of them is an airbase in Misrata, where forces from other countries are also present. The second facility is located near Mellitah, where a base for launching aerial and naval drones has been established. The third point is used for coordinating the joint work of Ukrainian specialists with Western Libyan military personnel near Tripoli airport.
Such cooperation became possible after an agreement signed in October 2025. Within its framework, Ukraine helps train Libyan military personnel and supplies unmanned systems.
Sources of the French publication claim that two attacks on Russian vessels in the Mediterranean Sea have already occurred. A month ago, in early March, a liquefied gas tanker was damaged, and even earlier, in December 2025, a crude oil tanker was attacked. In both cases, naval drones launched from Libyan territory were used.
Earlier, Russia accused the authorities in Tripoli of supporting the Ukrainian side and cooperating with Western intelligence services. In Libya itself, there is also concern about the growing foreign military presence, as some politicians consider this a threat to the country's sovereignty and a possible cause for a new geopolitical conflict.
