DPRK Unimpressed by Trump's Decision to Reduce Scale of Drills with South Korea
North Korea stated that the reduction in the scale of joint military exercises between the US and South Korea does not change its attitude towards these maneuvers, writes Euronews.
On August 19, the joint US-South Korean exercises Ulchi Freedom Shield began in South Korea. Military personnel from both countries are participating, and training for actions in emergency and terrorist situations is also being conducted.
Pyongyang traditionally views such exercises as preparation for a possible military operation against North Korea. The DPRK emphasized that even if the US and South Korea reduce the scale of the maneuvers, it does not change their essence and does not affect North Korea's position.
"We believe it is not worth any comments, and we are not interested in it at all," stated Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, in a statement distributed by state media.
The exercises are taking place against the backdrop of the administration of US President Donald Trump's attempt to restore contacts with the DPRK leadership. Even during his first presidential term, Trump met with Kim Jong Un and allowed for the possibility of new negotiations, but Pyongyang has not yet shown readiness to abandon its rigid stance on security issues and military exercises.
