During a conversation with the Belarusian leader, Russia Today journalist Rick Sanchez obsequiously spoke about the allegedly high level of public support for Lukashenka. According to him, survey data conducted by Belarusian sociologists show support at the level of 78% of the country's population, writes BelTA.
"Some Western leaders, such as Trump, Macron, Starmer — all of them combined, perhaps, do not have such support from their population and only dream of being supported in such a way," Sanchez said. "Maybe they say you are a dictator and treat you that way precisely because they might be envious of the numbers?"
"Among politicians, there is a certain envy towards each other. That is indeed true," Lukashenka said. "You are absolutely right, I often think about that too. God grant that some Western politician would have not 78 percent or 80 percent, but at least 60 percent (of public support)."
Lukashenka also spoke about US President Donald Trump.
"He's a short-timer, he has 4 years. What will he do in 4 years? Nothing. He will do nothing. Therefore, a president must have time," said Lukashenka, who has been ruling Belarus single-handedly for almost 32 years.
In 2020, Alexander Lukashenka, according to observers' estimates, lost the elections to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, but did not cede power and instead launched mass repressions.
Moreover, according to the results of a post-election state survey, 21% voted for Alexander Lukashenka, and 33% for Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. 11% stated that they did not vote, and another 26% did not want to answer the question.
Meanwhile, Lukashenka was reported as having 80%, and Tsikhanouskaya only 10%.
In the 2015 elections, 45% intended to vote for Lukashenka. Other candidates (including Tatsiana Karatkevich) had support at the level of statistical error — below 1%. But as many as 52% refused to answer sociologists' questions.
