Sweden detained a Russian "shadow" tanker sailing under the Syrian flag

Russia uses a network of old tankers with an opaque ownership structure to circumvent military sanctions.

Tanker Jin Hui

Sweden detained the tanker Jin Hui from Russia's "shadow fleet." It was sailing under the Syrian flag, reports kustbevakningen.se.

The 182-meter tanker was taken under control on Sunday, May 3, when it attempted to enter the Baltic Sea. The vessel was likely without cargo. Its destination is unknown.

The tanker is on several sanctions lists, including those of the EU and the UK.

While the investigation is ongoing, the vessel has been anchored near the city of Trelleborg.

In March, Sweden detained a cargo ship heading to St. Petersburg under the flag of Guinea. Later, it was decided to confiscate it.
