"Whoever drives through the village — stops, takes pictures." A Belarusian woman shared the story of an ancient tree on her homestead
In the village of Kolodno, Myadzel district, a large oak tree grows right by a residential homestead. You can only embrace it with three arm-spans. A journalist from narachanka.by asked the owner of the homestead, Gunefa Verbitskaya, about the history of this giant.

— I got married in Kolodno in 1966, — says Gunefa Vikentievna. — The young oak was already there then, but half as thin as it is now. My husband's relative, Vanda, who lived across the road, told me about it. Where our barn now stands, in ancient times, stood the house of my husband Valik's ancestors. Vanda grew up in it.
Her teenage sister was grazing cows and brought a young oak from the field. She planted it near the house. It's hard to say what year that was. Vanda was born in 1903, her sister was older… The young oak grew big. And look how young it still is, how healthy! Every part perfect! Only the electricians cut the branches from the very bottom so they wouldn't touch the wires.

— How is it living next to such a giant?
— I'm glad it's here. We don't have much trouble from it, only in autumn we need to rake the leaves. But what beauty! Whoever drives through the village — stops, takes pictures.
True, about three years ago the young oak fell ill. Some beetles or midges attacked it — there are many of them in the forest, and they flew here. In summer, the leaves started falling — small, already yellowish, and all chewed up. But the oak gathered its strength and defeated those midges.
My daughter, Irachka, noticed that many different birds had settled on it. They probably saved the young oak. Already last year, the leaves were large and green. And there were many acorns.

— Do you do anything with them?
— I myself do nothing, except that I used to give them to pigs. I would come home for lunch on my bicycle (I worked at the shop), gather half a bucket, and pour it into the trough. But my neighbor, Yuzya Yutsevichava, made coffee from acorns. She dried them, ground them in a mill, and probably added something — maybe chicory? I don't know, I didn't ask. But it turned out to be very tasty.
