Drone in Lithuania likely flew from Poland. There was an explosion
Debris has been found in northern Lithuania that may belong to the object due to which a red air alert was declared in the morning. According to Lithuanian services, it was most likely a drone. It was not shot down.
The air alert was canceled around 8 AM on October 18. The object disappeared from radar screens, and NATO fighters returned to their base in Šiauliai, reports BNS, citing Lithuanian services.
Later, small fragments were found in the Pasvalys district — on the roadside and in fields, far from residential buildings. Its main components are still being sought. According to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, the location of the find coincides with the area where radars stopped detecting the object. An area with a radius of about five kilometers has been cordoned off.
Vitkauskas clarified that the object was not shot down: the circumstances of its presumed fall are being clarified.
Residents reported a powerful explosion sound. However, it is not yet known if there was an explosive device on board.
According to the Lithuanian army, the object was moving north from the territory of Poland. Due to it, NATO fighter jets were scrambled at 6:15 AM. However, due to fog and cloud cover, pilots were unable to visually identify the target, so the decision to shoot it down was not made.
In the morning, a red alert was declared in the Panevėžys and Šiauliai counties, and residents were urged to go to shelters. In Kaunas, a yellow alert level was in effect.
People are now asked not to approach the found debris, not to touch it, and to report suspicious objects by calling 112.
