At the ecological wine farm Vergenoegd Löw near Cape Town in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 800 Indian Runner ducks go to work every morning. This breed of duck is used for the natural protection of vineyards from pests. This method has been used for more than 30 years, wp.pl reports .

Initially, the farm had only a few birds, but over time their number grew to approximately 800. According to farm manager Pieter Stewart, the ducks have become an important part of the vineyard's daily life.
Every morning at 8 o'clock, the birds leave their roosting place and march in a dense group through the farm's territory to the grape plantations. There, they primarily search for snails hiding among the vine leaves. Thanks to their slender bodies and upright posture, the ducks can easily move between the rows of plants.
This way, the farm reduces the number of pests without using pesticides. Additionally, duck droppings serve as natural fertilizer, enriching the soil with nutrients.
The farm also keeps geese. They protect nests and eggs from crows and other predators. After a day's work, the birds rest and bathe in a nearby pond.
The morning duck march has also become a local tourist attraction. The picturesque column of birds attracts residents and guests of the region.
Maintaining a large flock is more expensive than using chemical agents. However, the vineyard owners believe that the benefits from the birds are much broader: they support biodiversity, help preserve the local ecosystem, and improve soil condition.
The ecological approaches of Vergenoegd Löw farm were recognized by the WWF organization, which issued an appropriate certificate. The ducks here do not just entertain visitors but perform specific work to protect the grape plantations.
