10 grams short cost a baker in Bavaria 15,000 euros

In September 2025, in the town of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, a customer bought half a loaf of bread for 2.40 euros at a bakery — exactly half the price of a whole loaf.

Upon returning home, he weighed the purchased bread and discovered a shortage of 10 grams compared to the exact weight of half a loaf. The customer returned to the store and demanded compensation, writes DW.

The bakery owner, Martin Breitner, didn't take it seriously. He stated that in his family business, loaves of bread have been cut this way for 60 years, and jokingly said: "You lose some, you win some." But the customer didn't appreciate the humor and left the store angry, threatening "consequences."

The angry customer filed a complaint, and a few weeks later, state inspectors arrived at Breitner's business for an inspection.

As a result of the inspection, the baker was prohibited from selling half loaves in all his stores unless they were precisely weighed on calibrated precision scales, and the price was calculated based on the weight with cent accuracy.

Breitner had to equip all cash registers in his six stores in and around Pfaffenhofen with such scales. The staff at the sales points also had to be specially trained to work with the new equipment. All this cost the company approximately 15,000 euros.

At the same time, customers remained dissatisfied: now they have to pay for half loaves with cent accuracy, and the cash registers are overflowing with small coins.

Some ask if the price cannot be rounded as before — but Breitner, taught by bitter experience, is forced to refuse them.

Other bakeries in the city drew conclusions from his story. First, they stopped selling loaves in halves, and then also installed precise scales themselves.
