Iosif Khauratsiovich Dies

Belarusian historian and book publisher Iosif Khauratsiovich has died, his acquaintances reported on social networks. He was 96 years old.

Iosif Khauratsiovich was born on December 24, 1929, in the village of Varhutseva, Kruglyansky district, Mogilev region.

In 1948, he graduated from the Minsk Art College. He worked as a librarian, then headed the Talachyn District House of Culture and worked as an inspector in the department of cultural and educational institutions of the Talachyn District Executive Committee. In 1955, he graduated from Belarusian State University.

After that, he worked at the Institute of Party History under the Central Committee of the CPB (Communist Party of Belarus): he was a researcher, headed a sector, and later became academic secretary. In 1967, he received the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences, and in 1976, he became a laureate of the State Prize of Belarus.

From 1967, Khauratsiovich worked in the editorial office of the Belarusian Encyclopedia, where he first headed the editorial boards for the history of the USSR and BSSR, from 1973 he was executive secretary, and from 1975 — deputy chief editor. In 1983, he was awarded the title of Honored Cultural Worker of Belarus. 

Khauratsiovich's main scientific works are dedicated to the history of the revolutionary and national liberation movement in Western Belarus, the 1917 revolution, the history of World War II, and the activities of Belarusian communist organizations.

He was one of the authors of the monograph "Революционный путь Компартии Западной Белоруссии" (Revolutionary Path of the Communist Party of Western Belarus), as well as the author of studies and essays on prominent figures of the national liberation and revolutionary movement. He wrote about Viera Kharuzhaya, Aliaksei Salavei, Lieapoĺd Rodzievič, Soffja Pankova, Ivan Pulikhaŭ, Paval Liapiashynski, Uladzimir Azin, Mikhail Frunze, and others.

Khauratsiovich also participated in the preparation of numerous documentary collections dedicated to the history of the October Revolution in Belarus, the revolutionary movement in Western Belarus, the partisan struggle during World War II, the crimes of the Nazis on the territory of Belarus, and Soviet-Polish relations.

In addition to his scientific work, in the 1990s he participated in the creation of the "Illustrated Chronology of Belarusian History" and the development of principles for preparing encyclopedic publications.
