A new growth was found in Pope Leo XIV's lung. He will undergo surgery
The 71-year-old pontiff announced that a small nodule was discovered at an early stage during a recent examination. The operation is scheduled for this week.

Leo XIV spoke about his health on October 11, addressing the faithful in St. Peter's Square during Sunday prayer, Reuters reports.
According to the Pope, doctors advised removing the growth, and he agreed.
"The operation is already scheduled for the coming days," the pontiff said.
The Vatican did not specify whether doctors consider the nodule malignant. Other details about the operation and the Pope's health have not yet been reported.
Leo XIV was elected Pope in May 2025. He maintains a busy schedule and is preparing for a trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in November.
