Zelenskyy to dismiss deputy heads of SBU and HUR after shootout in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the deputy heads of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense will be dismissed after an armed conflict between employees of these structures in Kyiv.
According to Zelenskyy, personnel decisions have already been made. He stated that the leaders responsible for the respective areas of work should bear responsibility for the incident. The President called the shootout between SBU and HUR units "an absolutely disgraceful situation" and ordered a full investigation into all circumstances.
The shootout occurred on September 2. According to the SBU, its employees were conducting investigative actions in a case concerning the preparation of an assassination attempt on one of the representatives of the Russian opposition by Russian special services. During this, they encountered resistance from military personnel.
The conflict is linked to the detention of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander for combat operations of the "Russian Volunteer Corps," which is part of the HUR's "Timur" unit. The SBU claims that he had contacts with the Russian FSB and received a task to organize an assassination attempt on one of the leaders of the Russian opposition. Kaplunov denies these accusations.
On September 3, Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced that, within the framework of the criminal case regarding the shootout, two individuals – an SBU employee and a HUR serviceman – were notified of suspicion of illegal use of firearms.
