A resident of Hrodna, while mushroom hunting, found four artillery shells from the Second World War in the forest, writes the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Hrodna Regional Executive Committee.
The man went on a "quiet hunt" in the forest near a vegetable factory. In one of the clearings, he noticed unusual tree trunks. Looking closer, he realized that four 152-millimeter shells were directly embedded in them.
It is assumed that during the hostilities, the ammunition was left on the ground and slightly covered. Over time, they were forgotten, and the forest that grew in that spot gradually lifted the shells out of the ground with its roots and trunks.
The discovery site was cordoned off, and then sappers from military unit 5522 removed the shells and destroyed them.
A similar incident occurred in Hrodna six years ago. During the reconstruction of barracks on Praletarskaya Street, a munition was also found directly in the trunk of a poplar tree.
