Spotify to verify family plan members' cohabitation with QR code

Spotify is implementing a new way to combat family subscription sharing — verification via QR code. The company requires family plan members to confirm that they live in the same household as the owner. If a user fails to complete the verification on time, they may lose the ability to join family and duo plans for an entire year.

According to Spotify's instructions, the subscription owner must open the QR code on their phone. To do this, they need to tap on their profile picture, go to the 'Your Premium' section, and then 'Manage'. A family plan member scans the code with their phone's camera. For the verification to succeed, both users must be in the same location.

Reddit users who noticed the new feature pointed out that the QR code changes every few seconds. This makes it difficult to use a screenshot for verification. However, some users claim to have bypassed the restriction by using multiple devices and video calls.

After the notification appears, the member has seven days to scan the QR code and confirm that they live with the subscription owner. If they fail to complete the verification in time, they will automatically lose access to the paid plan and revert to the free version of Spotify.

Furthermore, such a user will not be able to join another family or duo plan for 12 months. However, they will still have the option to sign up for an individual paid subscription.

Spotify previously applied a similar year-long ban to users who failed address verification. However, the new QR code system, as the publication notes, significantly complicates bypassing restrictions.

Spotify's family subscription rules require all its members to live in the same household. Other services, including YouTube, also impose restrictions on sharing family plans. In the comments section of the article, one user called such requirements company greed and noted that, in their experience, Apple's family subscription terms do not require all members to live in the same household.
