Dictionary.com named the internet slang "maxxing" as the word of 2026. It means the aspiration to maximally develop a certain skill, improve some aspect of one's life, or optimize one's results.

The popularity of this word reflects the culture of self-improvement, the influence of social networks, and the spread of artificial intelligence. At the same time, it is increasingly used ironically, mocking the desire to optimize every aspect of daily life.
The word can be used independently or combined with others, forming names for various activities and trends. For example, "looksmaxxing" means the aspiration to maximally improve one's appearance, and "solomaxxing" is a conscious choice not to seek romantic relationships.
The word maxxing comes from the English "maximum," "maximize," and related forms. Its development was also influenced by the concept of min-maxing from gaming culture.
It describes a strategy where a player maximally develops a character's strengths so that their weaknesses have as little impact on the outcome as possible.
Later, maxxing began to be combined with other words, adding an "x" ending to them. Forms such as looksmaxxing initially spread on Reddit and other internet forums.
By the end of 2025, this trend had moved beyond isolated internet communities. The New York Times took note of it, writing about both semi-serious neologisms like booksmaxxing (maximizing one's enthusiasm for reading books) and intentionally absurd variations, such as cozymaxxing (the desire to make one's life as cozy as possible).
In 2026, the number of search queries for the word maxxing and its derivatives sharply increased. According to Dictionary.com's observations, there are currently no signs of this trend fading.
In addition to "maxxing," the dictionary highlighted four other words that reflect the social and cultural trends of 2026.
Affordability — the state of being affordable, meaning the ability to purchase necessary or desired goods and services. This word is related to the question of whether people can afford necessary expenses.
Data center — a facility for processing data. Such facilities attracted more public attention due to the development of artificial intelligence.
Odyssey — a long journey or series of adventures. The word became relevant again thanks to Christopher Nolan's film "Odyssey".
Unc — a shortened form of the English "uncle." It originates from African American Vernacular English, where it was originally used affectionately or respectfully for older male family members and mentors. In 2026, the word is more often used humorously or dismissively in reference to a person considered old-fashioned or insufficiently familiar with modern trends.
