Ornithologists explained why cranes have not yet flown away from Belarus
Cranes are still being spotted in various parts of the country. This year, the usual migration schedule has changed: the birds are record-late . What's happening?

As Ivan Bogdanovich, senior researcher at the Ornithology Laboratory of the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources of the National Academy of Sciences, told «SB», this year's migration is indeed happening later than last year's. However, cranes usually depart from late September to early November, so there's no cause for concern yet.
Grey cranes belong to the so-called short-distance migrants: with the onset of colder weather, they move to warmer places and can stay where the weather allows them to winter. It is currently warm enough in Belarus for the birds not to rush their journey. A similar situation is observed with swans.
Belarus also serves as a resting place for cranes during their migration. For example, about 10 thousand of these birds gather annually at the Yelnya swamp.
