Trump will cancel methane emission restrictions for the oil and gas industry
US President Donald Trump announced a large-scale softening of environmental requirements for the oil and gas industry. He intends to cancel the rules restricting methane emissions, introduced by the Joe Biden administration, reports AFP.

Speaking at an election rally in Lubbock, Texas, Trump stated that the abolition of these norms would save consumers and energy companies about $45 billion. According to him, this will also help to more fully utilize the energy resources of Texas, which is the largest producer of fossil fuels in the US, and ensure access to significant natural gas reserves.
The US Environmental Protection Agency previously confirmed the estimated savings of $45 billion, but did not publish detailed calculations. The head of the agency, Lee Zeldin, supported Trump's decision. He stated that Americans should be able to pay for heating and fuel their cars without excessive costs, and excessive regulation of the energy industry complicates this.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the main component of natural gas. According to the International Energy Agency, the US ranks first in the world in terms of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, ahead of Russia.
In terms of impact on global warming, methane is second only to carbon dioxide. According to scientists' estimates, it accounts for about a third of the increase in the average global temperature since the pre-industrial period — approximately 0.5 degrees Celsius.
However, methane retains heat in the atmosphere much more strongly than carbon dioxide, but remains there for a relatively short time — from seven to 12 years. Carbon dioxide, in turn, can persist in the atmosphere for hundreds of years.
