Trump Considers Creating a G7 Alternative with Russia's Participation
Politico reports that within the administration of US President Donald Trump, the idea of creating a new international format called "Core 5" (C5) is being discussed. This group is proposed to include five major powers: the USA, China, Russia, India, and Japan. It is expected that C5 could become an alternative to the current "Group of Seven" (G7), from which Russia was excluded in 2014.

According to Tori Taussig, a former National Security Council staffer during the Joe Biden administration, such an initiative reflects Trump's pragmatic approach to international politics, devoid of ideological coloring. He seeks cooperation with strong authoritarian leaders and recognizes regional spheres of influence.
Taussig also notes that the absence of European countries in the C5 could be perceived in Europe as a signal that the US views Russia as a full-fledged state with legitimate interests in the region.
Earlier, the portal Defense One reported that the C5 project was included in an expanded non-public version of the US National Security Strategy, where the first topics for discussion could have been the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, official White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly denied the existence of such a closed version of the document.
Earlier, Trump criticized Russia's exclusion from the G8 and advocated for expanding the format to include China. In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the G7's share in the global economy is shrinking and ruled out Moscow's return to the "eight," despite this being considered in the original American peace project.
