Last year, the climatic winter never arrived

In Belarus, 2025 entered the top five warmest years in history. Volha Baklanava, head of the Climate Change Study Department of the Meteorological and Climatic Monitoring Service of Belhydromet, reported this at a press conference, writes BelTA.

"The average air temperature was plus 8.5 degrees Celsius, which is 1.3 degrees above the climatic norm. Starting from 2013, the average annual air temperature across the country has been increasing at a higher rate, and the six warmest years, including 2025, fall within this period."

The warmest year in the entire history of observations remains 2024, with an average air temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius.

"The recurrence of positive temperature anomalies has visibly increased. Throughout 2025, in 8 out of 12 months, the air temperature exceeded the climatic norm. January is considered the coldest month of the year, but the average monthly temperature for January last year broke all records, was close to that of March, and amounted to plus 1.2 degrees Celsius, which is 5.3 degrees above the climatic norm. Such a January has been observed for the first time in the entire history of meteorological observations," she said.

Winter in Belarus in 2024-2025 arrived at a record late time.

"Short frosty periods in December and January alternated with longer thaws. Only at the beginning of February did winter weather conditions set in, which lasted for less than a month."

"Due to such synoptic conditions during the winter period of 2024-2025, in most parts of the country, with the exception of the extreme northeastern regions, climatic winter did not occur. This is the second time in the entire history of meteorological observations after 2019-2020," Volha Baklanava explained.

"Given the elevated temperature regime of the winter period and the early onset of spring with a sharp increase in temperature, which also contributed to the early resumption of spring vegetation, a stable transition of the average daily air temperature through 5 degrees Celsius downwards occurred in early March, in the middle of the first decade in the southern half of the country, which was a month earlier than usual. In the rest of the territory, the transition occurred on April 13-14, at times close to usual."

"At the same time, throughout the entire country, there was a transition of the average daily air temperature through 10 degrees Celsius upwards – marking the beginning of active vegetation, which is 1-2 weeks earlier than usual."

"The first spring month turned out to be exceptionally warm and, along with March 2007, took first place from warmest to coldest since 1945. The average air temperature across Belarus was plus 5.2 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees above the climatic norm."

"On some days, the air warmed up to 15 degrees Celsius and higher, reaching a maximum temperature of plus 20.4 degrees Celsius on March 10 at the Drahichyn station," she said.

At the same time, the weather was characterized by its instability and contrasting temperatures.

"In April, the air temperature was plus 9.3 degrees Celsius, which was 1.5 degrees above the climatic norm. Such or warmer April occurs in Belarus once every ten years, however, this month observed a contrasting combination of weather conditions. Periods of both abnormally warm and abnormally cold weather were recorded. At the Verkhnyadzvinsk and Ezyaryshcha meteorological stations, the absolute maximum temperature record for these observation points was broken, while at the Klichaw and Mstsislaw stations, the record for the absolute minimum April temperature was broken."

"May turned out to be quite cold. The average air temperature across Belarus was plus 10.9 degrees Celsius, which was 2.5 degrees below the climatic norm. At the Klichaw and Babruysk meteorological stations, the absolute minimum May air temperature record for these observation points was broken," the department head informed.

The temperature during the summer season was slightly below normal: the deviation was 0.2 degrees Celsius, she emphasized. "Such and lower summer temperatures have not been recorded since 2017. During the season, from 27 to 43 rainy days were recorded, compared to a norm of 24-32 days. In early autumn, the weather was very warm. The average air temperature across Belarus for September was plus 15 degrees Celsius, which is 2.3 degrees above the climatic norm," Volha Baklanava concluded.
