Soon meteorologists will be able to compile 15-day weather forecasts with the help of AI

Meteorologists in Belarus will be able to compile weather forecasts 10-15 days in advance thanks to a new "smart" medium-term forecasting system, which will be transferred to Belhydromet in 2027. This was announced by Sergey Lysenka, director of the Institute for Nature Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, writes BelTA.

The institute is already implementing geoinformation systems for weather forecasting and studying climate change. In 2026, a new system was introduced here to improve the accuracy of short-term weather forecasts. Now, the first medium-term forecasting system in Belarus is being developed, which uses artificial intelligence and, as assured, meets the level of the best world analogues.

The system is being created by the institute's own forces — physicists and programmers. It allows for hourly weather forecasts for 10-15 days and takes into account all local factors, thanks to which the accuracy of forecasts will be higher than that of currently available models. The system pays special attention to precipitation forecasting, as this is one of the most complex weather parameters.

In addition, the institute is developing a comprehensive climate change forecasting system. It shows how the climate will change under various greenhouse gas emission scenarios, and also allows for determining agro-climatic conditions, crop growing seasons, dates of the last spring and first autumn frosts, the sum of active temperatures, and more. Such forecasts help optimize crop structures, select crops adapted to new climatic conditions, and are transmitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, and scientific institutes in the form of analytical notes.
