«Just a mirror». Belarusians showed what the icy rain cyclone turned the roads into
«Sugar glaze» on cars and a «mirror» instead of sidewalks and roadways — this is the difficult reality many Belarusians had to face today, those who cannot stay at home in bad weather. The culprit was cyclone «Leoni», and, unfortunately, it decided to linger in Belarus, writes «Telegraph».
Belarusians' social networks were filled with videos proving that all warnings from meteorologists, rescuers, and traffic police were not empty words.
For many Belarusian motorists, the morning began with an unpleasant sight, which you usually only see in viral internet videos. The freezing rain, which had been falling since evening, covered many cars with an icy crust, giving motorists a second layer of glass.
Unfortunately, the adventures of motorists did not end there. Those who managed to de-ice their frozen cars faced a similar road. In areas not yet reached by road workers and utility services with sand-salt mixtures, the road turned into an ice rink or «just a mirror,» as the author of one video put it.
The man showed that not all cars managed this quest — overcoming even a minimal incline on the way when the section was covered in ice — trucks and buses simply stopped instantly, unable to move further.
Another motorist advised «colleagues» to think 100 times before getting behind the wheel today. The man demonstrated a complete lack of traction on an icy rut on the highway that had not yet been treated with salt.
Those who did risk it, unfortunately, were not always lucky, judging by the large number of morning accidents.
Pedestrians are not having an easier time. A resident of Gomel, for example, showed what a challenge the morning commute to work had become.
«It's just live ice, everything is sparkling. It's impossible to walk,» the woman warned.
By the way, Belhydromet extended the orange alert level due to dangerous black ice for another day, until the evening of January 28, for four regions of Belarus. In the Grodno and Brest regions, the situation will start to improve by then, but will still remain at a potentially dangerous level.
