Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated that the European Union currently lacks sufficient capabilities to force Russia to retreat either militarily or economically. Therefore, in his opinion, the EU should begin direct negotiations with the Kremlin, the politician said in an interview with L'Echo.

According to the politician, Europe cannot effectively threaten Vladimir Putin by supplying weapons to Ukraine, nor is it capable of exerting strong economic pressure on Russia without the support of the United States. Therefore, he believes, only one path remains — to seek a compromise and conclude an agreement.
"Since we cannot threaten Putin by sending weapons to Ukraine, and we cannot economically suffocate him without US support, only one method remains: to make a deal," he said.
De Wever also warned that if the European Union does not obtain its own mandate for negotiations, the United States might impose an agreement on Europe that would be unfavorable to it.
In his opinion, the US is "not at all on Ukraine's side."
"Sometimes it seems to me that they are closer to Putin than to Zelensky," he believes.
Earlier, the Belgian Prime Minister had already opposed harsh measures against Moscow and blocked initiatives related to using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
