The problem is related to the starter's magnetic switch (solenoid). In parts produced from July 2020 to July 2022, accelerated wear occurs with frequent engine starts. The metal particles formed in this process can cause short circuits and overheating, and in the worst case, the car catching fire during operation.
Before repairs are carried out, BMW recommends owners not to leave the car with the engine running unattended, especially when using the remote start function.
The recall affects a wide range of models:
- Sedans and Coupes: 2 Series (G42), 3 Series (G20, G21, G28), 4 Series (G22, G23, G26), 5 Series (G30, G31), 6 GT (G32), 7 Series (G11, G12).
- SUVs: X3 (G01), X4 (G02), X5 (G05), X6 (G06).
- Roadsters: BMW Z4 (G29) and its technically related Toyota Supra.
The industry publication kfz-Betrieb claims that 575,000 cars are affected, but the automaker itself has not yet confirmed this information.
As part of the service campaign, the starter will be completely replaced on all affected vehicles. In some cases, the battery may also need to be replaced to match the characteristics of the new component.
