A photo of former political prisoner Mykola Statkevich appeared on social networks after today's release from behind bars.

On February 19, it became known that Mykola Statkevich secured his release without deportation from Belarus. Prior to this, the politician suffered a stroke on January 21 and was treated for about a month.
Mykola Statkevich was detained in May 2020. On December 14, 2021, at a closed trial in Homel, he was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment in a special regime colony on charges of organizing mass riots. Together with him, other well-known opponents of the authorities were also sentenced. He served his sentence in a colony in Hlybokaye, and in recent years, he was held incommunicado.
On September 11, 2025, Statkevich was unexpectedly released along with 51 other political prisoners, and they wanted to forcibly deport him to Lithuania. Statkevich, however, refused to cross the border and remained on the territory of Belarus. After he was taken away by Lukashenka's security forces, nothing was known about his fate.
