In Moscow, a museum dedicated to the victims of German Nazis is opening instead of the GULAG History Museum
In Moscow, a new institution — the Museum of Memory, dedicated to "the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people" — is planned to open on the site of the GULAG History Museum. Art critic Ksenia Korabelnikova was the first to report the renaming. A source from Interfax agency confirmed that the information is true and has already been announced to museum employees, writes Current Time.

According to information from the Moscow City Hall, the new exhibition will be based on archival materials from the "No Statute of Limitations" project, initiated by the Search Movement of Russia.
It is planned that the museum will cover all stages of Nazi war crimes during World War II. The opening is scheduled for 2026. Natalia Kalashnikova, who has headed the "Smolensk Fortress" museum since spring 2025, will manage the institution.
The GULAG History Museum had been operating since 2001. In November 2024, its operations were suspended, citing violations of fire safety requirements. In January 2025, Moscow authorities dismissed Roman Romanov, who had directed the museum since 2012. Later, Anna Trapkova, head of the Museum of Moscow, took his place.
According to media reports, even after its closure, employees continued research work: participating in expeditions, recording the memories of the repressed, and preparing books on the history of the GULAG. It was also claimed that Romanov was dismissed after his refusal to censor an exhibition dedicated to Soviet repressions.
