"Factory Reset." Washington Demands NATO Focus Solely on Defending the Alliance Itself
The administration of US President Donald Trump insists on reviewing NATO's role and returning the alliance to its original function — defending the territories of member countries within the Euro-Atlantic space. Politico reports this, citing four diplomats from alliance countries.

According to the publication's sources, Washington advocates for scaling back or significantly limiting NATO's foreign missions, including ending one of the key operations in Iraq. Additionally, in recent months, the US has supported the idea of reducing the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and has opposed the participation of Ukraine and partners from the Indo-Pacific region in the official part of the alliance's annual summit, which is scheduled to take place in July in Ankara.
This approach within the organization is already informally called a "factory reset." It implies abandoning broader tasks that NATO has performed over the past decades, including in the areas of crisis management, global partnerships, and initiatives based on shared values.
Deputy Head of the Pentagon Elbridge Colby, speaking to the defense ministers of the alliance countries, outlined the administration's vision for the so-called "NATO 3.0" concept. According to him, not all missions can be a priority, and the main criterion should be the ability of European forces to fight, survive, and win in scenarios that are crucial for the defense of the alliance.
Some NATO countries are critical of this initiative. One diplomat called the abandonment of foreign initiatives a mistake, emphasizing that partnerships are crucial for deterrence and defense.
According to Politico, the US insists that Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea not be invited to participate in the official meetings of the Ankara summit, although their representatives may take part in other events within its framework. Analysts note that such a step would signal the alliance's concentration exclusively on its core tasks.
