Eismant: Statkevich was pardoned half a year ago, but then he returned to prison
Alexander Lukashenka approved the request of relatives of the opposition figure Statkevich, sentenced to 14 years, to release him after illness. Lukashenka's press secretary Natalya Eismant told RIA Novosti about this.
«First, I want to remind you that Lukashenka made the decision to pardon Nikolai Statkevich a long time ago. But then Statkevich refused to go. And returned to prison. Since then, a lot of time has passed — the convict started having health problems. In particular, he suffered a cerebral infarction,» said Natalya Eismant.
She noted that Lukashenka was informed about this. And he made the decision to transfer him to a hospital, where all necessary assistance was provided — he was saved.
«Then Lukashenka received numerous appeals from relatives — wife, family — with requests to release the convict home, to be able to look after and care for him. Lukashenka agreed to this as well. In this regard (as far as we know), at the request of his relatives — he is now at home, recovering,» Eismant emphasized.
