Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar warned that he has become a victim of "classic Russian-style kompromat," and unknown individuals, whom he claims are linked to the ruling party and special services, are preparing to publish allegedly compromising intimate video involving him. Magyar revealed this in a statement published on his social networks on Thursday, writes Deutsche Welle.
According to the politician, on August 2, 2024, his party "Respect and Freedom" (TISZA) organized a party for supporters, after which his ex-girlfriend Evelin Fogel invited him to another house party, and he agreed.
At five in the morning, they arrived at an apartment where, as Magyar recounts, there were people unknown to him, and on the table were alcohol and substances resembling drugs.
«I did not touch the items on the table. I did not use drugs. A few minutes later, Evelin and I went into a room and engaged in consensual sexual relations,» the politician said.
According to him, it later became clear to him from Evelin's behavior and blackmail that he had become a victim of a "compromising operation."
Magyar published his statement after media drew attention to a website hinting at the imminent disclosure of information about some incident. The website featured shots of a room with a double bed and the inscription "soon."
Magyar claims that people linked to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are behind the kompromat. «I will not allow Viktor Orbán and his people to distract attention from reality for weeks with mystification. Neither Russian special services nor a stream of fake videos will help you,» he declared.
Orbán's Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyás, responding yesterday to a question about the website, told reporters: «I cannot comment on something I know nothing about.» Orbán's government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács did not respond to questions sent by Reuters via email.
Parliamentary elections will take place in Hungary on April 12. Magyar's center-right party "Respect and Freedom" (TISZA) is ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ruling Fidesz party in most polls.
