A sports commentator from Germany has been accused of sexism. Figure skater Anastasia Gubanova, representing Georgia at the 2026 Olympics, received a personal record of 71.77 points for her short program. However, ARD sports commentator Daniel Weiss primarily noted not her achievement. "Gentlemen, unfortunately, she is already married," he said during the live broadcast, DW reports.
Criticism immediately fell upon Weiss on social media — including from popular bloggers. "If you are sports commentators, then comment on sports," entrepreneur Cordelia Rueders-Arnold stated on her Instagram page. In her opinion, Weiss turned Gubanova from a subject into an object. "What do I see? An athlete, a high result, pride, strength, grace. What does the commentator see? An ideal wife."
Cordelia's post garnered 200 thousand likes.
Later, Daniel Weiss apologized and noted that he had outlined Gubanova's sports achievements, but it was important for him to "comment not only on the sport itself." "My style is to show the person as well," he added.
