Trump was informed about the probability of significant losses among American servicemen and the threat of retaliatory strikes on US bases in the region, including those that could not be fully repelled. Separately, the risks of attacks from pro-Iranian forces in Iraq and Syria were discussed. It was emphasized that even with an increased US presence in the Middle East, air defense systems do not guarantee one hundred percent security.
At the same time, Trump was presented with the situation as high-risk, but one that could lead to significant geopolitical changes in the region in favor of the United States. One American official noted that the president was described a possible "epochal shift" in the Middle East in case of a successful operation.
Before making the decision, Trump received a series of briefings from the heads of security and diplomatic agencies. Representatives of intelligence, military leadership, and the foreign policy department participated in the discussions. The commander of American forces in the Middle East specially arrived in Washington to join the meetings in the White House Situation Room.
On February 28, Trump announced the start of a large-scale operation against Iran; along with the US, Israel launched strikes. He also called on Iranians to seize the moment for changes in the country. Iranian retaliatory strikes affected several states in the region where American military bases are located.
