From February 16 to 22, the Russian army captured 21 sq. km of Ukrainian territories, which became a record low since March last year, writes "Agentstvo" with reference to data from the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState.

According to analysts, last week Russian military units advanced by 46 sq. km in the Donetsk region. However, DeepState has no information about the capture of new settlements.
In addition, the Russian Armed Forces seized about five square kilometers of territory in the Luhansk region. A week ago, Russia lost control over 32 sq. km of land in the Dnipropetrovsk region, which moved into the grey zone.
The slowdown of the Russian army has been recorded since the beginning of the month.
Also, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and military analysts claim that the Ukrainian army has managed to reclaim some captured territories from Russia in recent weeks. Oleksandr Syrskyi stated the liberation of 400 sq. km since the end of January. OSINT analyst John Helin said that as a result of Ukrainian counterattacks, Russia lost 150 sq. km. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) claims that the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated 200 sq. km of land from February 1 to 23, but at the same time lost 35 sq. km in other areas.
However, Ruslan Leviev, founder of the Conflict Intelligence Team project, emphasizes that the intensity of the war has not decreased recently, but on the contrary, has significantly increased. He noted that this is measured not by territories, but by the number of losses on both sides.
In 2025, according to CSIS data, Russia lost 415.6 thousand military personnel killed and wounded. From the beginning of the year to mid-October, according to The Economist's estimate, about 100 thousand Russian servicemen died at the front.
And these losses continue to grow. Over the past two months, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Russian army lost about 65 thousand soldiers killed and wounded.
The total losses in the Russian army over 4 years of war exceeded the total number of USSR casualties in all wars after World War II by five times. They were 17 times greater than the Soviet Union's losses in the war in Afghanistan and 11 times greater than Russian losses in both Chechen wars.
The Ukrainian army, according to CSIS data, had lost 600 thousand people by December, 100-140 thousand of whom were killed. This means that approximately every 16th man aged 18 to 49 relative to Ukraine's pre-war population died at the front, notes The Economist.
The UALosses project estimated the number of fallen Ukrainian servicemen by the end of 2025 at 81.6 thousand people.
According to CIT data, in 2025, 2,919 civilians died as a result of the war, and another 17,775 people were injured.
